Flanagan headed to PGA thanks to comeback win in Rochester

08/19/2007 - Rochester, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Nick Flanagan roared from behind Sunday with a seven-under 63 to overtake James Driscoll and win the Xerox Classic.

Flanagan ended the tournament at 10-under-par 270, one stroke clear of Driscoll, who coughed up a four-stroke lead in the final six holes. Driscoll closed with a one-over 71 to finish at minus-nine.

"My finish to last season wasn't that great so I worked hard in the off season. I wanted to come out and fulfill my potential," said Flanagan, who picked up $108,000. "I said to my caddie at Q School last December that I was going to come out here and win three. I guess I did it. It took until August, but I did it."

The 23-year-old Flanagan earns an instant promotion to the PGA Tour as this was his third win of the season. Earlier this year, he won the Henrico County Open and the BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs. In 2003, Jason Gore was the last to earn the Battlefield or three-win promotion.

With the FedEx Cup playoffs starting next week, the first PGA Tour event Flanagan is eligible for is the Turning Stone Resort Championship, which takes place September 20-23.

"I guess I'll take some time off," said Flanagan of his plans. "I'm looking forward to getting out there and playing the rest of the year."

Jason Day, who is No. 2 on the money list, closed with a one-under 69. Day ended alone in third at minus-seven while David McKenzie, Scott Parel and Justin Bolli were one shot further back at six-under-par 274.

Driscoll was playing steady golf as he was two-under for his round through 11 holes. The birdies he carded on the third and 11th moved him to 12-under par, four clear of Flanagan at Irondequoit Country Club.

Flanagan, who was playing three groups ahead of Driscoll, eagled the par-five third to start his round. He rolled in a seven-footer for birdie on nine, then chipped in for birdie at 10 to move to seven-under.

The Australian birdied the 12th to get within three of Driscoll after his birdie at 11. The gap was down to two as Driscoll could not save par from a greenside bunker on the 13th.

Flanagan pulled within two strokes as he drained a 30-foot birdie try at 16. He parred the 17th, before converting a birdie putt from over 20 feet at the last to get in at 10-under.

With his group on the clock for slow play, Driscoll faltered on the 16th. He three-putted from the fringe for double-bogey to slide one behind Flanagan.

Driscoll knocked his second over the green at the 17th, but saved par from 18 feet. Needing birdie at the last for force a playoff, Driscoll dropped his approach 18 feet below the hole.

With Flanagan on the driving range staying loose, Driscoll's birdie putt came up short and right of the cup. He tapped in for par to finish second for the second time this season as Flanagan was congratulated on the range.

"I can't believe I won today that's for sure. I didn't think I could quite get there from seven back, but I shot seven-under and that is what I wanted to do," Flanagan stated. "I played average on the front nine and had that lucky shot on three and made eagle there, then had a good birdie on nine. I got lucky again on 10 and things just went right for me."

David Mathis stumbled to a two-over 72 Sunday to end alone in seventh at five- under-par 275. Fran Quinn was one stroke further back at minus-four after closing with 67.

NFL Football Betting : Odds on NFL Division to Win the Super Bowl

NFL Super Bowl Betting

The AFC South and the NFC East are the favorite divisions to have the next Super Bowl champ among them in the NFL betting odds. But more down to the point, these football odds are in favor of the Indianapolis Colts, by far the strongest team in the AFC South, and the Dallas Cowboys of the NFC East.

Most sports fans would agree that these two teams top the list to win it all before the season even begins. In the BetUS Sportsbook football futures, the Colts are +800 in the odds to win the Super Bowl, while the Cowboys are sitting at +1000 and the Super Bowl XLIV champions New Orleans Saints at +900. In the AFC South, the Colts won the division for five straight years after the 2002 realignment, before the Tennessee Titans won it in 2008. But the Colts came back strong in 2009 to win the division again en route to the Super Bowl. The Cowboys are the favorite to win the NFC East, as well as to advance far into the post season. The Cowboys won the division last season before their horrendous loss in the NFC Divisional playoff to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. But the ‘Boys will take that loss humbly and be ready for the playoffs this time around.

The NFC South is also very strong, at +600 in the NFL futures, considering that it is home to the defending Super Bowl champions. However, some predictions have the Atlanta Falcons with possibilities of claiming the divisional title this season in place of the Saints, as no team has won back-to-back division championships since the division realignment took place. Let’s not overlook the AFC North at +500. As TO goes to Cincinnati to join Chad OchoCinco and Adam “Pac-Man” Jones, this team looks to claim the division title again. And it is likely they will do so. The Bengals lost in the AFC Wild Card spot in a hard-fought battle against the New York Jets last season. Lest not forget the Pittsburgh Steelers, the XLII Super Bowl Champions… All these teams present interesting odds and matchups for the upcoming season, but the safest and surest bet seems to be with the Colts in the AFC South and the Cowboys in the NFC East. Online Sportsbook Football Betting

Why Sports Betting is so much fun?

Betting Sports

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)

But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)

Points (or Runs) Scored

Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.

The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.

Future Bets

Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.

Proposition Bets (or Prop Bets)

Proposition bets , also known as prop bets, focus upon the more exotic aspects of a game and are generally reserved for events that are widely televised. Prop bets are extremely popular when it comes to wagering on the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. The Imperial Palace Casino’s sportsbook is well-known for the enormous number of prop bets offered. For example, you can bet on:

Types of Bets

Straight Bet

Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.

Sports Betting Parlays

A parlay is a single bet that links together two or more individual wagers and is dependent on all of those wagers winning together. The benefit of the parlay bet is much better odds than placing each individual bet separately since the difficulty of hitting it is much higher.

Standard payoffs on a two-team parlay are 13/5; while a three-teamer pays 6/1; and a four-teamer 10/1.

Parlay cards are also fairly common in sportsbooks and popular with bettors, as they are released early in the week with set odds that do not change in return for a slightly lower payoff.

Round Robin Betting

Adventurous bettors who enjoy betting parlays sometimes put together a series of parlays called a Round Robin . A three-team Round Robin consists of one three-team parlay and three two-team parlays. For example, Joe likes teams A,B,C – with a Round Robin he has a three-teamer with ABC, and two-teamers with AB, AC, and BC.

Betting Teasers

Similar to a parlay, a teaser bet is a single bet that links together two or more individual wagers, but is different in that the point spread is adjusted to your advantage on each individual wager. In exchange for the points, you get less of a return on your bet compared to a parlay. For example, a 6-point teaser would move the line on a 7-point favorite from -7 to -1, meaning the team would have to cover 6 less points. Each of the individual wagers must win or the bet is a loss.

These are the main types of sports bets available today. But as sports betting continues to grow, sportsbooks will continue to develop new and creative ways to bet. We’ll continue to track these changes to the sports gambling landscape, so check back often and we’ll tell you all about it!
