Yankees to honor Steinbrenner, Sheppard this weekend

07/15/2010 - Bronx, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New York Yankees announced Thursday they plan weekend tributes to honor late team owner George Steinbrenner and former public address announcer Bob Sheppard.

Steinbrenner passed away Tuesday of a heart attack at age of 80, while Sheppard died Sunday at age 99.

The team said there will be a video tribute for Steinbrenner prior to Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. There will also be a special moment of silence for both Yankees icons.

A wreath will be placed in front of Steinbrenner's statue outside Yankee Stadium.

More than 40 former Yankees players and coaches will be in attendance for the team's 64th annual Old-Timers' day on Saturday. Sheppard, who was the team's PA announcer from 1951-2007, will be honored prior to the game with a video tribute and a special performance during the seventh-inning stretch.

Steinbrenner, who purchased the Yankees in 1973, won seven World Series titles and 11 American League pennants after he took control of the storied franchise.
