02/25/2010 - Lexington, KY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The second-ranked Kentucky Wildcats inch closer and closer to their 44th SEC Championship, as they play host to the South Carolina Gamecocks this evening at Rupp Arena.
John Calipari's Wildcats have put themselves in the driver's seat in the conference with a thrilling 58-56 win at Vanderbilt this past weekend. The win over the Commodores was the seventh straight for UK, pushing the team to an impressive 11-1 in league play. Kentucky holds a two-game lead in the conference standings over Vanderbilt (9-3) with four games to play.
South Carolina is much farther down the conference ladder. The team has had its moments this year, but has struggled of late, losing three straight games, including a 63-55 setback at home to Tennessee on Saturday. The loss to the Vols leaves the Gamecocks at a mere 5-7 in league play. To make matters worse, USC has really had its problems on the road this season, winning just one time in nine true road games.
The Gamecocks' shining moment this season came on January 26th, as South Carolina handed Kentucky its only league loss to date, with a 68-62 decision in Columbia. USC has won the last three meetings overall, but UK still maintains a huge advantage in the all-time series at 41-10, including a 21-2 edge in games played in Lexington.
A 17-3 run late for Tennessee proved to be the difference, sending the Gamecocks to their third straight loss this past weekend. South Carolina struggled to find its shot, connecting on just 31.7 percent from the floor and a miserable .192 from behind the arc (5-of-26). Brandis Raley-Ross led the way with 16 points. Devan Downey added 15 points, but was just 4-of-18 from the floor overall. Lakeem Jackson chipped in with 10 points, but USC allowed the Volunteers to shoot .488 from the field and were outrebounded by Tennessee, 40-30. The Gamecocks are not a high-percentage team in terms of shooting the basketball. The team is delivering on a rather pedestrian 41.7 percent from the floor, leading to a bland 72.8 ppg. Downey is shooting just .401 from the field, but still leads the SEC in scoring at 22.7 ppg. The team lost Dominique Archie (14.4 ppg) to a knee injury in December and Mike Holmes (11.0 ppg) to disciplinary action in January, leaving more of a scoring burden on Downey and Raley-Ross (11.4 ppg).
The Wildcats are as dangerous as any team in the country because of their ability to win games at either end of the floor. If a shootout is called for, UK is more than capable of accommodating, averaging a hefty 80.4 ppg on .480 shooting. If a defensive battle breaks out, Kentucky is certainly up to the challenge, limiting foes to just 65.3 ppg and well under 40 percent shooting (.378). The team is led by a pair of freshmen who might be the best players at their respective positions in the country. John Wall is the straw that stirs the drink in Lexington, pacing the team in scoring (16.8 ppg) and the SEC in assists (6.3 apg). DeMarcus Cousins has been a force in the paint, averaging a double-double with 16.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game (second in the SEC). Junior Patrick Patterson (14.8 ppg, 7.6 rpg) is another top-notch asset in the frontcourt, while freshman Eric Bledsoe (10.7 ppg) gives the team yet another young threat from the perimeter. It was a stifling defensive effort in Nashville this past weekend, as Kentucky held Vanderbilt to an ugly .321 shooting, including just .100 from behind the arc (2-of-20), in addition to forcing the Commodores into 15 costly turnovers. Cousins led the way with 19 points. Wall and Patterson chipped in 13 points apiece, while Patterson completed a double-double with 13 rebounds. Wall hit a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left in the game and made a big defensive play to send his team to victory.

Trash talk has a place in every competitive endeavor (except baseball; those stirrup-wearers are too busy chewing on their sunflower seeds and their supplements to worry about what their opponents are doing).
Fantasy sports is no exception. Any intelligent discussion of the subject would probably start with a thesis statement or a definition of terms. Thankfully, this wont be an intelligent discussion.
Let me just say that I am happy to take a place in this space alongside my talented colleagues, even our commissioner. (You should see how she bleats like a demented paper boy about league fees on our fantasy site).
Trash talking, I would argue, is primarily about amusing your friends, their sheeplike demeanors and sloping foreheads notwithstanding. The best place I have found for football trash talking is at www.SportsAlarm.com.
Beyond the entertainment factor, though, I would recognize that the sophomoric ritual has one advantage, when properly applied. It magnifies your fantasy triumphs and mitigates your fantasy failures by transforming the eventual point total into an afterthought. Winning makes it seem like your opponent really is a truss-owning, lapel-pin-wearing nitwit. And in defeat, trash talk can be the air bag to break the fall from your hyperbolic heights. The plug-necked yahoos on your team, you can say, will be sacking groceries by the end of the season.
The best trash talk, in my view, is layered and nuanced. And it doesnt focus only on your opponents team. It picks apart your opponent. The idea is to create a shock-and-awe-scale blizzard of nonsense, and the goal is to make your opponent drop his hands from his keyboard in exasperation.
What team does your opponent root for? Accuse a Giants fan of having a Joe Namath pillowcase. Wheres your opponent from? Give a look of concern no matter his reply, then say, I'll try to type slower for you next time. Is your opponent into politics? Label everyone a tax-and-spend corporate shill.
Cap all that with a liberal application of irrelevance. For instance, dont just conclude by saying your opponent is a twerp who drafts like my grandmother. Say that your opponent is a sweater-wearing, eyebrow-plucking twerp who drafts his team about as well as Zsa Zsa Gabor gave acceptance speeches at the Oscars. By the time your foe makes sense of that, his starting running back will have had puppies.
But what about you? Hmm? Recall a memorable slam? Have a tried-and-true technique? Know someone who seems impervious to insult? Take a moment and tells us about it. Put together some (fit-for-publication) thoughts. You wont be too busy returning phone messages from your friends, Im sure, to reply.
In addition to the trash talking, the Sports Alarm has a huge gallery of high resolution pictures of beautiful women and models in bikinis. The most popular models are: Lindsay Lohan, Carrie Underwood, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Paris Hilton.
LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP
With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at MySportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.
There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
